Essential Boating Safety Tips

Summer is here, and that means it’s prime time for Illinoisans to get out on the lake! Whether you’re just out to have a relaxing and fun day with your family or you fish on the water, there are some base rules you should follow to maintain safety while you’re boating. Check them out below!

1. First thing is first: you need a life jacket! Before any other rules and safety measures, a life jacket is going to make sure you stay afloat if you fall out of your boat or it sinks. Before you go out on the water, make sure you purchase a life jacket that properly fits you, and ensure that the straps are secure.

2. Make sure your boat is stocked with emergency supplies like a tool kit, first aid kit, drinking water and food. A great emergency item idea to include is a horn or some other very loud noisemaker that you can use in the event of a dangerous situation.

3. If you see a storm approaching, it’s time to get off the water and wait for the storm to pass. While you want to be prepared with life jackets and emergency kits, it’s best to avoid having to use them!

4. Don’t forget some sunscreen! Your skin will thank you later.

5. Bring an extra set of clothing just in case you get wet! Anyone who’s accidentally fallen in the water without a spare set of clothes to change in to knows the pain…

Boating is a prime recreational activity in our area, and it creates fantastic memories for friends and family! Make sure to follow the above safety rules and stop in today to pick up everything you need for your next day out on the lake!
